The streets of Whitechapel and Spitalfields in the East End of London are awash with an eclectic mix of colourful and creative street art. There are places where every single square inch of a wall or a shutter has been utilised as a canvass on which artists have daubed examples of amazingly imaginative urban art.
What I set out to do in this video was to capture the street art wherever it has appeared around Spitalfields and Whitechapel. As I wandered around photographing it I was struck by how fickle and time sensitive some of these pieces are.
There were, for example, old instances of art that have been up there for several years now and which have started to fade and peel, adding an added artistic element as the works of art mature, then fade, then peel and then are painted over to create new art works.
I also found myself asking the simple question, what is street art? For example, there are posters on the walls of several building that have become as much a part of the fabric as some of the massive mural-like examples that can be found all over the East End streets. The elements have "gone to work" on them, curled them and peeled them and, effectively, turned them into works of art in their own right.
Elsewhere I found examples of artworks that have been painted over several times, but which still peep through the new layers and incarnations holding on, so it seems, to past glories!
It soon became apparent that there is so much street art round the East End of London that I'd have to be selective about which to include on a short video.
My solution was to make several video tours, of which this is the first. The soundtrack was composed by, and is performed by the wonderful Bjorn Lynne of shockwave-sound.com.
In closing, I'd like to say a huge thank you to those street artists who have taken the time and the trouble to let their creativity shine on the streets of London's East End. The resultant art works are truly creative, often thought provoking, occasionally humorous, but always and ever an absolute joy to behold.
